Summer Enrichment Program at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine

Program Mission

The Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) at Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine (SSOM) is a five-week program for students interested in a career in medicine. The program’s mission is to help students understand health disparities and the importance of promoting equity in healthcare.

Program Objectives:
  • Understand the importance of healthcare equity
  • Gain knowledge and skills to work effectively in underserved communities
  • Integrate evidence-based medicine into learning
  • Build leadership skills for medical education and community service
The program is designed for individuals who will enrich the diversity of our medical student community and who demonstrate a commitment to lifelong service in underserved communities.  It is our hope that program participants will exemplify the principles learned in the program through their future choices in medical education and practice.

Program Highlights:
  • Academic lectures by SSOM faculty
  • Weekly community service activities
  • Shadowing experiences at Loyola clinics
  • Specialty lunches with Loyola physicians
  • Mock admissions interviews
  • Mentoring by current SSOM medical students
  • Field trips and social activities in and around the Chicagoland area
Participant Requirements:
  • United States citizenship or permanent resident visa
  • Demonstrated commitment to a career in medicine
  • Demonstrated potential to enrich the diversity of the medical student community
  • Demonstrated commitment to service in underserved communities
  • Strong academic record
  • Must be an AMCAS applicant for the 2013 entering class (must NOT be in the current application process for 2012)
  • Must have previously taken MCAT or will take MCAT by May 31, 2012
  • Participants may not be enrolled in or committed to any other programs, employment, activities, events, or research, and should anticipate some evening and weekend activities.
  • Applicants of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Accommodations:Because Loyola is a commuter campus, students outside of the greater Chicagoland area will be housed at a nearby university.  Students who live in the area may have the option of being housed at the university based on the number of students needing housing.  Housing costs are covered by Loyola.

Participants will receive:
  • $1200 Stipend
  • $100 Loyola meal card to help defray the cost of lunch expenses.  Additional meals may be provided during the course of the program.  (All other meals are a the participant’s expense.)
  • Reduced rate to our state-of-the-art fitness center for the duration of the program
  • Books and educational supplies at no cost
