WHAT: A walkthrough with the artists for Seeing Ourselves, followed by a roundtable discussion about the show on Saturday, March 31 at 2:30 PM.

Seeing Ourselves is a "rare, interdisciplinary"(-Huffington Post) medical diagnostic imaging-based exhibition at the MUSE Center of Photography and the Moving Image (580 Eighth Ave. between 38th & 39th St., 7th Floor). The show includes works by 60 artists and scientists, curated by physicians Kóan Jeff Baysa, MD, and Caitlin Hardy, MD, with works that explore the ramifications of neuroimaging in the fields of cognitive neuroscience and neuroaesthetics.

The Medical Mirror, an interactive installation featured in the Seeing Ourselves exhibition, reveals an anatomical reflection of your body in real time and space using custom-created software and Microsoft's Kinect technology. You will see a digital 3-D representation of your brain and nervous system looking back at you as you move and spin around the room. This proof-of-concept work of art is the next step towards a new form of portraiture that visualizes people's health data in the past, present, and future.

WHY: To view and discuss beautiful expression of the human form which provides effective, connected communication and education about the body in medicine and healthcare, with modalities such as Medical Avatar (on iPad app, in development) which can do this.

WHEN: Saturday, March 31 at 2:30 PM.

WHERE: MUSE Center of Photography and the Moving Image
580 Eighth Ave. between 38th & 39th St.
7th Floor

Clinical Research Assistant Position at St. Luke's-Roosvelt Hospital Center

Program Dates: June 4th – August 8th
Application Deadline: April 13th 5 p.m.

OVERVIEW OF POSITION:

The Academic Associate program is a clinical research assistant program in the Emergency Department of the St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center. Your primary responsibility will be to ongoing research projects being conducted in the department in an effort to improve emergency care, to bring greater precision to the practice of emergency medicine (EM), and to improve the quality of care. Each of these projects focuses on a different aspect of patient care, and they include clinical trials on medications, patient and physician survey studies, observational cohort studies, practice-pattern studies, and ultimately many more. Opportunities for high-level involvement in specific research projects are available to motivated, reliable, interested individuals in addition to baseline commitment. Observation of emergency department procedures, resuscitations, and general care is an integrated part of the experience, and in some cases required for execution of research enrollment. All AAs will have the opportunity to shadow a resident on a couple of their shifts.

There is no pay for the AA position. However, the directors of the program, Dr. Bania & Dr. Quaas, expect and plan to write letters in support of AAs who spend time and effort on the program for endeavors that you are pursuing (i.e. medical school or health-related fields, etc.) It is an extremely enriching experience for you, both in terms of the research experience you gain, and also in the exposure to modern medicine that you enjoy. The ED is the place where illnesses of every single type and variety end up eventually. There is no illness that we do not see in the ED, and we see patients at all points of the spectrum in terms of severity. You will also gain invaluable research experience and hands-on clinical involvement in research. This is not bench research, so your experience will be clinically oriented.

COMMITMENT:

We ask for 2 shifts per week from each AA, and also request your attendance at a few evening training sessions per semester. Please carefully review the "commitment" section in the AA manual to learn the attendance policy. You are responsible for knowing and following our policies for attending shifts, training sessions, and orientations.

Why Calories Count: From Science to Politics

An Evening with Dr. Marion Nestle

Sponsored by CAS Women in Science (WINS)

Date: Thursday, March 29
Time: 6 PM
Location: Jurow Hall, Silver Center first floor

Calories--too few or too many--are the source of health problems affecting billions of people in today's globalized world. Although calories are essential to human health and survival, they cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. They are also hard to understand. Marion Nestle will explain in clear and accessible language what calories are and how they work, both biologically and politically. She will explore issues that are fundamental to our understanding of diet and food, weight gain, loss, and obesity, helping us sort through a great deal of the misinformation put forth by food manufacturers and diet program promoters.

Marion Nestle is Paulette Goddard Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health and Professor of Sociology at New York University. She is the author of What to Eat and, from UC Press, Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health; Safe Food: The Politics of Food Safety; and Pet Food Politics: The Chihuahua in the Coal Mine.

Research Opportunity: MOST-Science Study

Contribute to a national research study funded by the National Science Foundation and the Noyce Foundation, both of which support Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) learning in out-of-school time settings in New York State.

MOST-Science is a nationwide study funded by the National Science Foundation and the Noyce Foundation. We are collecting data on the organization and practices of science, engineering and technology-focused out-of-school-time (OST) programs across the country, and we are eager to gather and analyze a large, comprehensive body of data on current work in this fast-growing and diverse field. We would very much appreciate your assistance in contributing to our study and/or spreading the word about it.

We recently released an online questionnaire for leaders of youth OST science programs that can be found at: www.colorado.edu/eer/research/outofschool.html

We are particularly interested in OST programs for middle and high school-aged youth that focus on science, engineering and/or technology. The questionnaire asks program providers for details about who participates in their programs, for how long and how often, and with what kinds of content, hands-on activities, career information, mentors and role models participants have the opportunity to interact. More details are available at our web page and the links there.

One out of every 15 people who fills out the questionnaire will win a $50 gift certificate to their choice of either Staples or DonorsChoose.org (donate supplies to a classroom in need!).
Most importantly, however, by filling out the questionnaire, participants will:
  • Alert our research team to your organization and its youth programs
  • Help to identify common needs and challenges for youth OST science programs
  • Contribute to a study that will inform funders, policymakers, researchers, and other program providers about the good work in this area and remaining needs
  • Support development of future research studies to examine the development, education and career outcomes for youth who participate in OST science programs.
If you have any questions or would like more information about MOST-Science, please check out the website at: www.colorado.edu/eer/research/outofschool.html

REBUILD Globally Sandal Drive: Get your pair of sandals TODAY!

NYU Haitian American Student Association x REBUILD Globally Sandal Drive

Here's a brief description of REBUILD:

Restoring Environments By Utilizing Innovative Local Development, or R.E.B.U.I.L.D. Globally, is an NGO in Haiti started by Julie Columbino, an American volunteer, who envisioned a new approach to relief work after the earthquake of 2010. As charity organizations quickly ran out of supplies to give out to the displaced earthquake victims, it was apparent that Haitians were in as much need after the charitable efforts as they were immediately after the quake. With such large scale devastation, the handouts of food, water, and other supplies could only last for so long. What was needed was sustainable relief and Columbino believed that the best way to aide Haitians was to help them help themselves.

Rebuild Globally is a pathway out of poverty for Haiti's most vulnerable.

Why NYU HASA has teamed up with them:

An NYU Alumna and dedicated HASA member, Sandra Fernandez, is currently volunteering with REBUILD globally in Haiti. Her passion, along with the incredible mission of REBUILD Globally, has inspired NYU HASA to spread the word to the greater NYU community. Through this special collaboration, REBUILD has lowered the price of their sandals and agreed to donate an equivalent pair to someone in Haiti with no shoes. This partnership will only last until March 21st, the last day you can purchase the discounted sandals.

What you can do:

Please spread the word and buy a pair of sandals for yourself. Click on the look book to see the various styles of REBUILD sandals.

Director of Scholarship Programs at ARC

Time: Friday, March 2nd, 9:30 - 11:30am
Location: Academic Resource Center, 18 Washington Place

The NYU Office of National Scholarships oversees the application and nomination process for current NYU students (and recent alumni) who wish to apply for a small set of national prestigious scholarships*. Some of these scholarships are open to underclassmen and will help pay for college here at NYU or for study abroad programs; these include Goldwater, Udall, and Boren. Others will fund post-graduate study in the U.S. and abroad; these include Rhodes, Marshall, and Fulbright, to name a few. All of these are highly competitive awards, and winning them is a great honor.

It is never too early to learn about the opportunities available to you and to think about applying – many successful candidates have begun planning their applications as early as freshman year. Come talk to the Director of Scholarship Programs and learn about what scholarships are available, what you need to begin thinking about in order to apply for them, and how NYU can help you in the application process.
