Volunteer Opportunity: H.E.L.P. Project @ Bellevue Hospital


Volunteer Position at Bellevue's Pediatric Clinic for Bilingual (English/ Spanish) Students

The H.E.L.P. Project (Health Education and Literacy for Parents) is seeking a special group of committed bilingual volunteers to work with parents in a health education program in our pediatric clinic.

The Goals of the project are to: Improve parents’ ability to read and understand healthcare instructions. i.e. medication labels
- Instruct parents to use written materials to focus on their children’s overall health
- Help parents to better communicate with Pediatricians
- Motivate parents to continue their own education

Leading up to review of the healthcare legislation by the Supreme Court of the United States, this event will address the legal and practical issues following enactment of the much-debated Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.
The event will feature three moderated panels, which will present a multifaceted view of the legislation, challenges to its constitutionality, and its implications for individuals and health care service providers.
The first panel, “Is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act Constitutional?” will explore the constitutional arguments for and against the Act as the Supreme Court prepares to hold oral argument on these issues.
The second panel, “State and Federal Health Care Implementation Strategies,” will explore the various methods for implementation of health care reform by federal and state administrations.
Finally, the third panel, “Economic and Business Implications of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act,” will examine the ways in which the Act might improve, harm, or alter the delivery of health services to insurance beneficiaries, affect the health of the population, and change the business of healthcare providers.

Dalai Lama Fellowship

New York University is one of eight universities to offer the Dalai Lama Fellowship, an international program of the Dalai Lama Center.

One fellow will be chosen from each university to receive up to $10,000 toward a year-long project of his of her design in one of four focus areas:
1. diminishing violence; 
2. mitigating income and wealth inequities; 
3. encouraging cross-cultural and inter-religious communications and understanding; 
4. promoting environmental sustainability.

Podiatric medicine is the highly specialized branch of medicine dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, and disorders affecting the foot, ankle, and lower extremities.

American Medical Student Association Pre-Medical Conference at Rutgers University

The American Medical Student Association committee at Rutgers University will host the AMSA Pre-Health conference at Rutgers New Brunswick – Livingston campus on February 4th. It will be the largest conference on the East Coast! This conference will allow students to find out about the field of medicine, as there will be many sessions at the conference that will provide them with information regarding it. At the event, people will be able to interact with fellow premed students, as well as, students from medical schools. 

The conference will be held on Feb. 4th, 9:00 AM - 6:30 PM at the Livingston Student Center. Students can interact and get all their questions or concerns regarding pre-medicine answered at the event!

The Medical Dialogue Review (MDR) needs writers and reviewers for this semester's edition! MDR is a peer-reviewed undergraduate journal that gets published at the end of each semester.

If you are interested in writing, send a proposal for an article to Misha at mb3687@nyu.edu. Preliminary proposals should be received by Sunday, February 19, 2011. See below for the complete timeline.
 

There are only TWO basic criteria for MDR submissions:

  1. Medical relevance means that the subject matter is both current and important in the medical community.
  2. Social significance means that the article should be written to inform an audience who is not necessarily interested in any medical or scientific field (that is, an article on research should not be a mere write-up of research, but an explanation of why and how that research affects humankind).
We encourage submissions in all fields as they relate to medicine, from the humanities to the sciences. We also encourage medical art submissions, patient perspectives, and all forms of relevant creative writing!
 
·         Article Proposal- Sunday, February 19, Midnight
o   A short paragraph explaining what you are going to write about or submit to the journal. The earlier you submit a proposal, the sooner we can approve your topic, so submit them early! (send to mb3687@nyu.edu)

Research Opportunity: Full-time Clinical Research Assistant Position

Clinical Trials Research Assistant Position
Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Children's Hospital at Montefiore

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in New York is seeking an individual to serve as a program assistant in our busy Clinical Trials Office. The Clinical Research Associate coordinates clinical research activity within the division, including internal protocols, industry protocols, and large multi-center trials. The Clinical Research Associate is expected to work with general guidance from a supervisor to screen, enroll, and follow study subjects, ensuring protocol compliance and close monitoring while the subjects are on study. A bachelor's degree in sciences or related field, or High School diploma with equivalent clinical research experience, proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office, and knowledge of medical terminology are required. Clinical research coordination experience as well as in-depth knowledge of good clinical practices as set forth by Federal regulations is strongly desired.

Volunteer Opportunity: Project Contact

Seeking Volunteers


We currently have a few select opportunities in our Emergency Room Program “Project Contact” at New York Methodist Hospital in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

In order to qualify you must at least be completing your sophomore year of college. Priority will be given to upper classman and post bac students. Candidates who speak Spanish or Russian are encouraged to apply.


This program requires a Project Contact Orientation as well as twelve hours of training beyond the general orientation. An eight hour a week service commitment divided into two four hour shifts for no less than six months is mandatory. Placements are available seven days a week, fifteen hours per day. There is a minimum time requirement to be discussed at the time of the interview.


Project Contact provides pre-med students with exposure to the needs of patients during an emergency room visit. Volunteers become part of the Emergency Department Team serving in four areas: Treatment, Registration/ Triage, Rapid Evaluation Unit, and Pediatric Treatment. Volunteers work directly with patients, caregivers and medical professionals. This is a patient focused assignment that allows volunteers the opportunity to add to the high quality of service given at New York Methodist while observing and learning how care is provided in a modern fast paced Emergency Room.

MedPrep Program

Northeast Regional Alliance MedPrep Program

Applications are now being accepted for the MedPrep Program. MedPrep is a 3-summer medical school preparation program for students from historically underrepresented or economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The program is Free and students receive a small stipend for books. MedPrep accepts current college freshmen and sophomores in good academic standing who are residents of New York City, Long Island, Westchester, or New Jersey. The program includes science classes, seminars, study sessions, MCAT preparation, clinical experiences, and research experiences, and takes place during 6-7 weeks for three consecutive summers. The program takes place in two locations: New Jersey Medical School (for NJ residents) and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (for NY residents).

The application deadline for the summer of 2012 is February 1, 2012, and applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Research Opportunity: Full-time Research Assistant Position @ NYU Med

NYU Medical Center Research Assistant Position
Seeking Graduate Applicants


A large multidisciplinary research team, with a focus on evaluating behavioral interventions to improve health, has a full-time research position available. We are looking for a highly intelligent, responsible, organized, academically oriented college graduate who is interested in devoting at least a year to research before going on to pursue a career in medicine, psychology, public health, or a similar field.

The research assistant will assist in recruitment, data collection, data management, and data entry in extramurally funded research studies evaluating different behavioral approaches to improve treatment management for patients with heart failure, diabetes, hypertension, or stroke. The American Diabetes Association study (TACTICS) and the American Heart Association study (PREVENTS) are in their fourth year, while the federally-funded study VALOR in Heart Failure, is in its second year. In addition, a new federally-funded study, VIP in Heart Failure, and an NIH study for patients with hypertension, an Enhanced Medication Monitoring Program, began recently. The research assistant will also participate in organization of study materials, administrative duties, and literature searches. The individual will have primary responsibility in patient recruitment and follow-up, and will conduct patient intakes and evaluations. As part of the position, the research assistants will be involved in key academic deliberations involving a multidisciplinary group that includes individuals with expertise in medicine, psychology, epidemiology, statistics, health education, economics, etc. Depending on the research assistant’s performance, he/she will be eligible for publication and presentation opportunities.

We are looking for someone who would be available to start immediately. This is a paid position (full-time $42,028) and affords excellent opportunities for those planning on applying to PhD programs or medical school. The RA will be joining 5 other full-time research assistants.

Spring Break Trip to Nicaragua!

For those of you looking to have a global public health and community development experience but have a budget constrain, this is the trip for You!

Trip details:
  • Air fare (between $500-700) and should be purchased as soon as possible because prices are going up!
  • $350 for expenses (100 dollar deposit checks need to be written to FriendsNE and sent to 1 Torpie St. Boston, MA 02120 ASAP)
The $350 will include:
  • lodging
  • meals
  • potable water
  • transportation
  • most activities (volcano climbing, beach visit etc (ALL to be decided shortly)

Public health related events:
  • Will incorporate service (building a family a home and community activities and events)
  • Public health related programming (dictated by group wants and needs: i.e.small public health lectures, networking, research opportunities, community development projects, etc)
  • Culture, History and FUN.
  • This trip will be done in conjunction with a small group from Binghamton (undergrads.)

Fundraising requirements: As a group, when it has been decided who is attending, we will have to fundraise money that will go to:

  • A large library being built in Chacraseca.

Open House at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine

There is an upcoming open house at NYCPM in conjunction with the New York Podiatric Clinical Conference taking place at the Times Square Marriott Marquis.  It will take place on Saturday, January 28th at 8 am 

The day's event will start at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine with a presentation about the podiatric medical profession including the various sub-specialties such as sports medicine, wound care, surgery, dermatology and podo-pediatrics.  It will be followed by an admissions presentation and tour of College and the Foot Centers of New York.  

Following the Open House at the College, we will host a lunch with NYCPM alumni at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square.  After the lunch, you will have access to the NY Podiatric Clinical Conference where you will have the chance to attend lectures and workshops and visit the exhibtion halls to learn more about the exciting developments and opportunities in the field.

REU Site: Nanotechnology for Health, Energy and the Environment

The Center for Inclusive Education and Nanotechnology Program is pleased to our announce summer research opportunity for qualified, academically talented and motivated undergraduates interested in eventually pursuing their doctoral degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline at Stony Brook University. The program gives students an intensive research experience with leading researchers in the field.

Participants will work with a faculty mentor and become fully integrated into active research groups using state-of-the-art facilities. Participants will have the opportunity to work closely with their faculty mentor, attend seminars on Research Methods and Graduate School Preparation, participate in workshops and present their research results at the REU Symposium and Closing Ceremony at the completion of the program.

Dates: May 29 – August 3, 2012

Program Components:

  • Full time research supervised by a faculty mentor
  • Research Methods and Graduate School Preparation Workshops
  • “Mid Week Lunch Seminar” - every week a faculty member will present a topic based professional development or academic workshop
  • Poster Presentation at REU Symposium and Closing Ceremony

Eligibility:

Open to all undergraduate students majoring in a STEM field with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Applicants must have completed at least their freshman year; graduating seniors are not eligible. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Award:

  • Participants will receive a $4000 summer stipend for full time research
  • Lodging and meals will be provided to all participants. A $300 travel award will be provided for those participants living more than 75 miles from the Stony Brook Campus
  • Priority deadline is March 5, 2012 (rolling thereafter)

Clinton Global Initiative Univeristy 2012

The CGI U 2012 Annual Meeting will be held at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. from March 30 – April 1, 2012.

To be considered for attendance at CGI U, students should apply online at www.cgiu.org by January 17, 2012.

Building on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), President Clinton hosts the CGI U Annual Meeting for students and youth organizations to create innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues. Since its inaugural meeting in 2008, CGI U has brought together more than 3,500 students from over 650 schools and 110 countries.


In order to attend, all CGI U participants are required to develop a Commitment to Action: a new, specific, and measurable plan that addresses a challenge on their campus, in their local community, or around the world. The CGI U meeting includes plenary sessions, working sessions, and other special events that provide participants with a wide variety of knowledge-sharing and networking opportunities. The program allows CGI U members to discuss global issues, develop practical skills, identify potential partners, and formulate concrete plans of action for the months ahead.

Summer Internship Opportunity @ University of Cincinnati College of Medicine

University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Summer Experiential Programs

Every year the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine offers two summer experiential programs for academically talented undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine:

  1. Summer Surgery Experience (SSE; June 18-29, 2012) and
  2. Summer Neuroscience Experience (SNE; July 23-August 3, 2012).

These fast paced programs each include lab practica, operating room observations, shadowing with faculty, case studies, and presentations from University of Cincinnati College of Medicine faculty. The application for both programs will be available online from January 9, 2012 to March 1, 2012. Applicants must complete the online application and submit a single packet of supplementary materials including two letters of recommendation, official college transcripts, and other official forms by March 1, 2012.

Eligibility requirements: There are no course prerequisites, but students must have a 3.4 cumulative GPA, and most competitive applicants have a strong foundation in upper-level sciences. Many students have completed at least one year of organic chemistry (including lab) and courses in advanced biology, college calculus, and anatomy. Additionally, competitive applicants have demonstrated their interest in the medical professions through medically-related extracurricular activities. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have completed one year of college by the first day of the program. Preference is given to rising juniors and seniors.
