Barbara Onua Scholarship

Deadline: Scholarship applications are due October 16, 2012, 5:00 p.m. (No exceptions).

Purpose:   Mckinley Onua & Associates has established the Barbara Onua scholarship to promote access and diversity in the legal profession.

Award Components: Each year, the Mckinley Onua will select one (1) recipient to receive a $1,000 scholarship that rewards students pursuing a career in the legal profession. Scholarship recipients will also receive a four (4) month internship at the law firm.

Award Criteria:  Applicant must be enrolled in a four (4) year bachelor or juris doctor program at an accredited institution.

Application Process:

Applicant must submit the following items:

1. One (1) completed application form;

2. One (1)-character reference in the form of a letter of recommendation;  

3. One (1) personal essay; and

4. One (1) resume.

Personal Essay: In your essay, please answer one (1) of the following questions:

ESSAY 1: Discuss the legality and/or equity of employers requiring potential employees to waive or limit their legal rights by signing employment applications that contain clauses that limit employees’ legal options for any incident that may occur during the employment.  These clauses include arbitration or statute of limitation reduction clauses, among other.   [500 - 2000 words]

ESSAY 2: Discuss “Amat Victoria Curam,” which translates to “Victory favors the Prepared”. [500 - 2000 words]

THE DEADLINE for the application is Monday, October 16, 2012. Applications postmarked after this date will not be considered. No incomplete applications will be considered.

Announcement of Scholarship Recipients: The scholarship recipient will be announced on November 3, 2012 at the McKinley Onua & Associates, LLP official anniversary party. The winner will be invited to attend the reception to receive his or her award.  The winning essay will also be published in the McKinley Onua & Associates, LLP brochure.

Special Provision: Scholarship funds will be issued directly to the recipient’s academic institution.
