Where can I find more information about the NYU Masters Program in Bioethics?To learn more about the program and application requirements, visit http://bioethics.as.nyu.edu/object/bioethics.resourcesprospective for more information.

How do I request a waiver of the GRE requirement?To request a waiver of the GRE requirement, applicants must hold a Ph.D., post-baccalaureate professional degree (J.D., M.D.), or must have taken the MCAT or LSAT within the last five years. After submitting a completed application online, the eligible applicant must contact the program via email at bioethics@nyu.edu to request a waiver of the GRE along with a copy of the score (can be a screenshot or scanned copy of official MCAST or LSAT scores). If the applicant holds a professional degree, this must be reflected in the transcripts submitted in his/her completed application. Subsequently, the program will request a waiver from the Graduate Enrollment Services (GES) on behalf of the applicant. The Bioethics program will then respond directly to the applicant notifying her/him of the status of the waiver approval. I have not yet taken my GRE but plan to do so after the May 1st application deadline. I want to apply for fall 2012 admission, can I still do so?Yes. You may still submit your application without your GRE scores. If accepted into the program, you will receive a notice from GES stating that your acceptance is conditional upon receipt of the GRE scores or GRE waiver. You must submit your GRE scores or request for a waiver (and have the waiver approved) before matriculating into the Bioethics program.

I have missed the May 1st application deadline for fall 2012, can I still apply?
Yes. The preferred application deadline is May 1st for applicants who wish to apply for admissions to the fall 2012 semester. Applications that are submitted after the deadline will be accepted on a rolling-basis. Preference for fellowship assistance will be given to candidates who applied by or before the May 1st preferred deadline. 

I have been accepted to the NYU Bioethics program, what do I do next?
You must respond to our offer of admissions by the date mentioned in your offer letter. To notify us of your final decision,  follow the link specified in your admissions letter to either accept or reject our offer. If you have accepted our offer, you must mail the candidate reply form and a non-refundable tuition deposit to the address listed in your offer letter. You will then be contacted by Amanda Anjum who will send you a welcome packet detailing all the information you will need to know about your time and studies at NYU. She will also provide you with information about your assigned graduate adviser who will help guide you during your time with the Bioethics program. I have been accepted to the NYU Bioethics program but want to defer, how can I do this?
To defer, you must first accept our offer via the link specified in your offer letter and pay the non-refundable tuition deposit. After doing this, contact GES to notify them that you would like to request a deferral of the fall or spring semester(s). Note that you cannot defer for more than one academic year. If you been granted a deferral and have not matriculated in one academic year, you will then need to re-apply for admissions to the Bioethics program if you wish to matriculate into the program. A deferral does not guarantee that you will be accepted into the program again, that you will receive the same financial aid or departmental scholarships that you originally received, or that your original application was kept on file.

Do I need to fill out any additional paperwork to be considered for the Bioethics departmental tuition fellowship award?
No. There is no additional paperwork that needs to be completed to be considered for the Bioethics departmental tuition fellowship award. All eligible applicants who posses high academic ability and potential will be automatically considered for the tuition fellowship award during the review of their admissions application. If accepted into the Bioethics program, applicants will receive notification of receipt of the fellowship in their acceptance letter.

Are there loan programs and financial aid options available for Master's students?Yes. New York University offers several loan programs to meet a variety of circumstances. Most programs are made available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Is there housing available for Master's students?
Yes. The Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) offers students a variety of housing opportunities through the University's Office of Housing and Residence Life. For those who prefer off-campus housing there are graduate list servs where apartment availabilities and call for roommates are posted (*open only to NYU students). The Master's College also hosts several off-campus housing events such as the upcoming 'apartment resource vendor fair' where attendees can meet with representatives from apartment rental companies and non-profits, learn tips about apartment hunting in NYC, and learn about tenants rights. They also host 'roommate mixers' where graduate students have the opportunity to find potential roommates or find out more about available housing.

Volunteer Research Opportunity: Summer/Fall

Qualifications: The applicant must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduate or post-bac student, and should be pursuing a psychology major, nutrition major, pre-medical concentration, or something similar in nature. Research experience, experience with patients, and completion of a Research Methods or Statistics course are preferred, but not necessary.

Job Description:
Our externally funded multidisciplinary research team has positions available for Summer/Fall interns. We are looking for highly responsible, organized psychology major or pre-medical students who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine, psychology, clinical research, and related fields. This is an opportunity to be involved with several of our ongoing studies. The American Diabetes Association study (TACTICS) and the American Heart Association study (PREVENTS) are in their fourth year, while the federally-funded study VALOR in Heart Failure, is in its second year. In addition, a new federally-funded study, VIP Treatment in Heart Failure, began recently.

The individual would be responsible for assisting in recruitment and data management in ongoing research studies evaluating different behavioral approaches to improve treatment management for patients with heart failure, diabetes, hypertension, and stroke. The intern would also participate in organization of study materials, administrative duties, and literature searches. The individual will have opportunities to aid in patient recruitment, to observe patient intake and study interviews, and to participate in research team meetings. As part of the position, interns will be involved in academic deliberations involving a multidisciplinary group that includes individuals with expertise in medicine, psychology, epidemiology, statistics, health education, economics, etc. The interns are able to join in conducting the research, and in preparing for presentation and publication. As such, interns who make substantial contributions to any material can expect to be named as coauthors. For example, at the NYU Medicine Research Day in May 2011, two of our interns presented abstracts. In the past, they have also been coauthors of abstracts at large national meetings.
 
The position requires that the applicant be available for at least 20 hours a week during business hours (8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday) during the summer and 10 hours during Fall business hours. The position, which is an unpaid position at the Brooklyn VA Medical Center, would start as soon as possible and end in December. This is an excellent research opportunity for students planning to apply to graduate programs in Clinical/Health Psychology or medical school.

Job Description: Research Assistant for Dr. O'Brien's projects within the setting of Hospital for Special Surgery. Tuesdays require presence in operating room with Dr. O'Brien in a shadowing capacity only; responsibilities include: data collection, intraoperative photo acquisition and management, interaction and communication with patients and their family members on behalf of Dr. O'Brien. Wednesdays may include morning status meetings with Dr. O'Brien and other members of the research team. Wednesday clinic time will require shadowing Dr. O'Brien and data collection through interaction with patients. There is also a possibility of occasional Friday status meetings with Dr. O'Brien.

To qualify for this position you must be proficient in the Microsoft word and excel. Preferably some experience in a medical office setting.  Must have strong communication and knowledge of medical terminology. Bachelors degree or equivalent required - Biology majors highly desirable.

-Writing and updating IRB protocols.
